The overview

Ghana is a cultural trip first. Accra is fast, musical and increasingly well set up for visitors, while the Cape Coast holds some of the most historically significant sites on the continent. For many Black American travelers in particular, it is a journey with weight to it — and one that benefits from being planned thoughtfully rather than squeezed into a long weekend.

• Cape Coast and Elmina castles are UNESCO World Heritage sites and among the most affecting places to visit in West Africa.
• Accra's food, music and design scenes have grown substantially and reward time spent.
• December is a genuine cultural high season, with a concentration of events and returning diaspora.

Accra

The base for most trips — food, nightlife, markets and museums.

Cape Coast & Elmina

The historic castles, roughly three hours west of Accra.

Kakum National Park

Rainforest canopy walkways, usually paired with the Cape Coast.

Volta Region

Waterfalls and lake scenery for travelers with extra days.

Things worth knowing

• A visa is required for US citizens, and yellow fever vaccination is part of the entry process — Jet Set Adventures will tell you exactly what is needed but does not process visas on your behalf.
• The Cape Coast castles are emotionally heavy. Building in decompression time afterwards is a real planning consideration.
• December books up well in advance for both flights and lodging.
